SHAWANO, WI – The Shawano Police Department is rolling out a new way to keep the community safe, on two wheels.
The department has added electric bikes to its fleet, aiming to enhance mobility and response times in areas that are harder to reach by squad car. The e-bikes will be used from early spring through late fall and are expected to increase police presence in parks, trails, and other pedestrian-heavy areas.
Officials say the bikes allow officers to move quickly and quietly, giving them a tactical advantage when responding to incidents or pursuing suspects on foot.
“Whether or not there’s loud exhaust on a squad car, which obviously there’s not, you can still hear a squad car in the middle of the night at 2:00 in the morning when everything’s quiet,” said Officer Tyler Thornborrow of the Shawano Police Department. “You can hear it rolling down the road even if the lights are off and they’re blacked out. Those bikes are a lot quieter.”
The addition is part of the department’s broader effort to strengthen community policing and improve public safety through innovative tools.
