SHAWANO, WI – With measles making a concerning comeback in several parts of the country, local health officials are urging residents to remain vigilant and informed.
Fever, dry cough, runny nose, and sore throat are among the early symptoms of measles, a highly contagious virus that is seeing a resurgence in the U.S. Nick Mau, Health Director for Shawano-Menominee Counties, says that while Wisconsin has not yet confirmed any cases, the region is keeping a close watch on national trends.
“Most states in the country have had some sort of measles outbreak or caseload, and that is outside the norm,” Mau said. “Usually, measles is a case here and there.”
One of the main contributors to the increase, according to Mau, is the growing number of people who are not vaccinated for MMR, measles, mumps, and rubella. He also encouraged residents to consider potential exposure risks while making summer travel plans.
Families looking to learn more or schedule an MMR vaccination can contact the Shawano-Menominee Counties Health Department for information and appointments.
