WAUPACA COUNTY, WI – The Waupaca County Sheriff’s Office is alerting residents about a phone scam involving fraudsters posing as law enforcement officers.
According to officials, scammers are using the names of actual deputies and claiming that individuals have outstanding warrants or failed to report for jury duty. The callers then demand immediate payment, often in the form of gift cards or wire transfers, to resolve the issue.
Sheriff Timothy Wilz emphasized that these calls are fraudulent and that the sheriff’s office will never request money or personal financial information over the phone.
Wilz is urging residents to spread the word, especially to older adults and others who may be more vulnerable to scams. “Stay alert and stay safe,” he said.
Anyone who has received such a call is encouraged to report it to local law enforcement.
