The Shawano County Sheriff’s Office responded to 42 incidents on Monday, July 15th, ranging from criminal damage to reckless driving and welfare checks.
The day began just after 2 a.m. with a report of vandalism in Birnamwood, where screens were damaged at a residence on Railroad Street. A short time later, deputies handled a trespassing complaint at an apartment complex in Cecil.
A welfare check around 6:15 a.m. in Cecil involved a shirtless man seen limping near a storage building and the Amish store, he was reportedly carrying a blue sweatshirt and appeared possibly injured. Not long after, deputies responded to a burglary alarm at Billy’s Higher Wire on Lake Drive and a vehicle-versus-deer crash on Highway 29 near Hofa Park.
Around 9 a.m., two information reports were filed, one in Birnamwood regarding vandalism and littering at a clinic, and another at the Shawano County Fairgrounds where a counterfeit $20 bill had been passed at a 4-H food stand.
In Cecil, a stolen pontoon trailer was reported missing from a campground lot, where the lock had been cut. That theft remains under investigation.
Several welfare checks were conducted throughout the day, including one involving a patient at ThedaCare who had not heard from her significant other in several days, and another out of concern for an individual’s safety in a troubling family situation.
Animal-related calls included a hound dog tied up without water in Leopolis and a complaint in Shawano of two dogs barking all night without shelter.
Reckless driving was an ongoing concern Monday with at least four separate incidents reported, two involved high-speed motorcycles weaving through traffic on Highway 29, one involved a motorcycle speeding through Shawano, and another in Bonduel where a Ryder truck was reportedly being driven erratically and blew through a stop sign.
Deputies also handled a hazardous materials situation near Tigerton when a person working on an old fire truck was exposed to chemicals, with some of the substance spilling on the ground.
There were also reports of property damage, harassment, bail jumping, a disabled vehicle, and multiple traffic hazards, including debris on Highway 29 near Exit 234 and a dead deer blocking traffic near the cheese factory.
The department also picked up two individuals on warrants, handled two 911 hang-ups, and investigated suspicious activity involving the smell of marijuana at a local convenience store.
