SHAWANO, WI – As the Fourth of July is today, Shawano Police Chief Mike Musloff is reminding residents of the city’s fireworks laws and offering important safety tips for the holiday. With fireworks galore in Northeast Wisconsin, it’s crucial to know what’s legal and what could lead to a citation.
According to Chief Musloff, fireworks that stay on the ground, such as fountains and snakes, are legal to use in Shawano without a permit. However, for larger fireworks, a permit is required and can be obtained through Shawano City Hall.
“We try to avoid issuing citations because we want everyone to have a good Fourth of July,” Musloff said. “But if unsafe behavior occurs, we will issue a citation for that violation.”
Musloff also emphasized the risks of shooting off fireworks in residential areas, especially given the number of nearby houses. “It’s difficult to shoot fireworks off in the city because there are so many houses around, and there’s a chance that a fire could start. Also, since you don’t always know who made the fireworks, there’s a significant risk that they may malfunction and explode on the ground,” he explained.
For safety, Musloff strongly advises that only adults should handle fireworks, and children should stay clear to avoid accidents. With safety as a top priority, the chief urged residents to enjoy the festivities while being mindful of the potential hazards.
