SHAWANO, WI – With summer in full swing, Shawano Lake is expected to be a hot spot for boating and recreation, but state officials are reminding watercraft operators to follow important safety regulations, especially the “slow no wake” rule.
According to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, many boaters overlook that the slow no wake requirement doesn’t just apply to crowded areas, but also near shorelines.
“If we’re within 100 feet of shoreline or docks, we have to be driving slow and no wake,” said Clark Delzer of the Wisconsin DNR. “A lot of people forget that this rule includes shorelines, not just other boats.”
The DNR says one of the most common violations they see involves personal watercraft. “Actually, the most common violation where we often see issues with this is with jet skis,” Delzer explained.
The slow no wake zone is designed to protect swimmers, minimize shoreline erosion, and prevent damage to docks and other property. Delzer encourages all lake-goers to familiarize themselves with boating rules to ensure a safe and enjoyable summer for everyone.
