Health officials have confirmed three cases of Powassan virus in Wisconsin, a rare but serious illness spread by blacklegged ticks. Unlike Lyme disease, Powassan can be transmitted within 15 minutes of a tick bite and may cause severe neurological issues, including brain swelling. There is currently no vaccine or specific treatment. Officials are urging residents to take precautions such as using insect repellent, wearing long clothing, and performing tick checks after being outdoors. The virus is most commonly spread by deer ticks, which are active in wooded and grassy areas across the state.
