SHAWANO COUNTY, WI- With recent high temperatures hitting Northeast Wisconsin, the Shawano County Highway Department is responding to an uptick in road buckling along major highways, including several spots on State Highway 29.
Highway Commissioner Grant Bystol confirmed that four pavement buckles were reported Sunday, with another already logged Monday morning, and more are likely as the heat persists.
“This kind of road damage is common when extreme heat hits,” Bystol said. “With the forecasted weather, we anticipate a few more buckles potentially yet Monday.”
Bystol offered several tips for drivers to stay safe and avoid hazards caused by pavement blowouts:
-
Slow down and remain alert, especially in high-traffic or rural areas.
-
Watch for sudden traffic changes or slowdowns around work zones.
-
Move over for highway crews and roadside workers actively repairing pavement.
-
Report any significant road issues to the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department immediately.
Crews are standing by to respond as soon as damage is reported. “We’ve got trucks and equipment ready to go,” Bystol said. “Whether it’s a temporary or permanent fix, our goal is to get the road back to good traveling conditions right away.”
With summer heat likely to continue, county officials are urging drivers to remain cautious and help report issues early so repairs can be made quickly and safely.
