SHAWANO, WI – A sweltering heat wave is expected to sweep across Shawano and surrounding areas this weekend, with forecasted highs nearing the 90’s and heat indexes pushing conditions into the danger zone. Health officials are urging residents to take precautions, stay indoors, and check on vulnerable neighbors as the region braces for potentially life-threatening heat.
Temperatures are expected to reach the mid-to-upper 90s on Saturday, with Sunday’s high forecasted to hit 100°F. Combined with high humidity, the “feels-like” temperature could climb even higher, putting outdoor workers, children, seniors, and those with chronic illnesses especially at risk.
Nick Mau, Health Director for the Shawano-Menominee Counties Health Department, said residents should be proactive and seek shelter in air-conditioned spaces. “We really just recommend going into public buildings,” Mau said. “If they’re open, the libraries are always considered cooling centers. It’s a safe and accessible option for anyone needing relief.”
Mau also warned residents not to underestimate how quickly the heat can affect the body. “Really listen to your body, and don’t underestimate how quickly heat exhaustion and heat stroke symptoms can come on,” he said. “If you’re doing any sort of strenuous activity or exercise outside, really limit that time.”
Common signs of heat exhaustion include dizziness, nausea, rapid heartbeat, and headache. Left untreated, it can escalate to heat stroke, a medical emergency that requires immediate attention.
Health officials recommend drinking plenty of water, avoiding alcohol and caffeine, wearing light clothing, and never leaving children or pets in vehicles—even for a short time.
