BIRNAMWOOD, WI – The aftermath of a powerful April tornado is still being felt in rural Shawano County, where local farmer Kurt Olson is continuing to recover from severe damage to his property.
“We lost two heifer barns,” Olson said. “One went completely down. The other one shifted to an unsafe level that we had to take it down.”
Fortunately, no animals or employees were injured during the storm. “It was the best-case scenario you could ask for,” Olson added. “Everyone was safe, and we’re thankful for that.”
With the barns destroyed, Olson said the farm had to quickly come up with a solution for their heifers. “The heifers are farmed out for the short term until we create a new plan,” he explained, noting that recovery and rebuilding efforts are ongoing.
Despite the challenges, the Olson farm is still opening its gates for the annual Brunch on the Farm which includes wagon rides, a petting zoo, and children’s activities.
