SHAWANO, WI – Deputies with the Shawano County Sheriff’s Office will soon be equipped with state-of-the-art communication tools, thanks to a newly approved contract renewal with Motorola that includes 40 brand-new portable radios for all sworn officers.
Lieutenant Chris Madle shared the news this week, calling the radio upgrade a significant step forward for officer safety and operational efficiency.
“This is a really big project,” Madle said. “It had kind of a large dollar sign next to it, but long term, it’s going to save the county a lot of money.”
The new equipment will replace the department’s current radios, which Madle said are still functional but no longer represent the latest in communications technology.
“Currently, our portables, they work. They’re good,” Madle explained. “Motorola is kind of like the cream of the crop when it comes to communication, but they’ve released in the last couple years what’s known as next-gen radios.”
These next-generation radios come with advanced features designed to enhance field operations, including large touch screens, GPS capabilities, and improved inter-agency communication. The GPS functions will allow deputies to view each other’s real-time locations from their devices, improving situational awareness during emergencies and joint responses.
