SUAMICO, WI- Visitors to the NEW Zoo & Adventure Park hoping to see one of its most beloved animals, Louie the otter, will be disappointed to learn he’s not coming back.
Nathanial Wagner of the NEW Zoo confirmed that Louie, who returned to the wild after previously living at the zoo, has successfully readjusted to his natural environment. “We are not getting Louie back,” Wagner said. “He was originally a wild otter, and we’re not surprised he was able to easily return to that life. He’s doing very well out there.”
While Louie is gone, the zoo’s remaining otter, Ophelia, is still on exhibit. Wagner said she’s adjusting just fine to living alone, noting that North American river otters often lead solitary lives. “She’s not as social as Louie was, so you may not see her as much. But she’s content,” he added.
Community members had reported otter sightings in the area, many wondering if Louie might return. But Wagner said there’s little reason for him to come back. “He must be finding food and doing just fine,” he said. “If he ever wants to return, he’s welcome, but for now, it looks like he’s got it made.”
