SHAWANO, WI – The American Legion Post 117 in Shawano is preparing for a leadership transition as Kevin Barkow is set to become the post’s next commander at an upcoming meeting. Barkow, a U.S. Army veteran, previously served in the role and is returning to continue supporting the local veteran community.
“I’m coming back because it’s a cause worth fighting for,” Barkow said. “Just like I served my country, I’m proud to serve our American Legion Post here in Shawano.”
As Barkow prepares to take command, Post 117 is also focusing on a membership drive. He’s calling on younger veterans, especially those who served in Afghanistan and the Persian Gulf, to consider joining.
“With most of our members being Vietnam-era veterans, it’s time for the next generation to step up,” Barkow said. “Even if younger vets can’t be fully active, just being a member helps keep the organization strong.”
Veterans interested in joining or learning more can visit Post 117 or contact the group directly for details.
