SHAWANO, WI- After more than a decade of service, Shawano County Clerk Kara Skarlupka has announced her retirement, officially stepping down from her role on July 11.
Under Wisconsin statutes, county clerks must submit their resignations to the sheriff, who then notifies the county board chairman.
Skarlupka, who was re-elected in November to a four-year term that was set to run through Dec. 31, 2028, expressed that the decision had been planned for some time.
“After thoughtful consideration, I have decided to retire at this time,” Skarlupka wrote in a message. “I want to emphasize that this decision is in no way a reflection on Shawano County. It has been a privilege to work here for the past 12 years, and I am truly grateful for the opportunities and experiences I’ve had.”
While she declined to go into details about her post-retirement plans, Skarlupka said she looks forward to spending more time with her family. She also noted she will continue her long-standing role as clerk for the Town of Washington until fully retiring.
The replacement will be appointed by the county board based on a recommendation from the executive committee, serving the remainder of Skarlupka’s term rather than prompting a special election.
The Shawano County Clerk serves a vital role as the county’s chief election official, overseeing elections, issuing marriage licenses, and maintaining records adopted by the board, among other statutory duties. The annual salary for the position is listed at $72,904.67.
Despite her quiet exit, Skarlupka leaves behind a legacy of steady leadership and service.
“I have been planning it for a while.”
