SHAWANO, WI- Shawano County has been removed on a list that was issued by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
Shawano County worked to clarify its status after being listed by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) as one of several jurisdictions across the country deemed non-compliant with federal immigration laws. The listing, released late last week, also includes two other Wisconsin counties.
County officials say they were caught off guard by the announcement.
“We proactively reached out to various state and federal
agencies to find the reasons behind this designation and to understand the steps necessary for removal,” said Shawano County Sheriff George Lenzner.
The county has enlisted the support of Congressman Tony Wied, who has been in contact with the Sheriff’s Office and is helping facilitate communication with federal officials.
“We are grateful for the assistance of Congressman Tony Wied, who contacted our Sheriff’s Office to offer his support. His
office has been instrumental in being a liaison with federal contacts to seek clarity on this matter.”
County leaders also emphasized that Shawano does not operate as a sanctuary jurisdiction.
