SHAWANO, WI- The Shawano Hawks delivered a statement win Thursday night, toppling the No. 2 ranked Seymour Thunder 3-2 in a tightly contested game at Memorial Park.
Senior pitcher Pete Bruette was lights out on the mound, tossing six strong innings and allowing just three hits and two runs. Bruette walked two and struck out six, keeping Seymour’s potent offense off balance with a mix of sharp breaking balls and precise fastballs. The Hawks’ defense backed him up with a clean performance in the field.
Shawano did all of its offensive damage in the second inning. Anderson Schmidt ripped a two-run double into the left-center gap to get the scoring started, and Jerzy Brocker followed with an infield RBI single to push the lead to 3-0.
Seymour chipped away with runs in the fourth and sixth, but Shawano held firm. Brocker came in to close it out in the seventh, retiring the side in order with two strikeouts and a popout to first base to earn the save.
The Hawks totaled seven hits on the night, led by Riley Dixon, who went 2-for-3 at the plate.
