WAUPACA, WI- The Waupaca County Sheriff’s Office is joining law enforcement agencies across the country in the annual Click It or Ticket campaign, aimed at increasing seat belt use and saving lives.
From May 19 through June 1, deputies will be stepping up enforcement, watching closely for unbuckled drivers and passengers. While the campaign involves issuing citations, Sheriff Timothy R. Wilz says the real goal is preventing needless injuries and deaths caused by failing to buckle up.
“In Wisconsin, it’s the law,” Wilz said. “You can be stopped and cited for not wearing your seat belt, and drivers can also be held responsible for every unbuckled passenger in the vehicle.”
The sheriff’s office reminds the public that even in small towns and rural areas, the consequences of skipping the seat belt can be life-changing—or even fatal.
“Seat belts save lives,” Wilz added. “We’re not out there just to write tickets. We’re out there to keep people safe.”
The campaign is part of a nationwide effort led by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to promote consistent seat belt use. According to national data, nearly half of the people killed in crashes each year are unbuckled.
