SHAWANO, WI- A Shawano County man has been sentenced to 18 months in federal prison for assaulting a postal worker with a shotgun while under the influence of alcohol.
Benjamin Joos, 44, was sentenced Wednesday in federal court after previously pleading guilty to a single count related to the September 24 incident in the town of Grant.
In addition to the prison term, Joos was ordered to serve three years of supervised release and pay $10,124.46 in restitution, according to court records.
The incident occurred while the female postal carrier was delivering mail. According to the plea agreement, she was placing mail in a residential mailbox when she heard a loud noise and thought her vehicle’s window had shattered. She then saw Joos pointing a shotgun at her and yelling for her to get away from his mailbox.
Joos fired once, and both the carrier and her vehicle were struck by shotgun pellets. The victim sustained minor injuries to her arms and was briefly hospitalized.
Joos admitted to having been drinking at the time of the incident. His blood alcohol concentration was measured at 0.178, more than twice the legal limit.
