MATTOON, WI- A powerful storm swept through the Mattoon area late Monday night, triggering a series of emergencies that kept local fire departments, law enforcement, and utility crews busy well into the early morning hours.
Shortly after 10:30 p.m., emergency services were called to a residence on Park Avenue in Mattoon, where a 500-pound LP gas tank was reported to be off-gassing. The tank, described as completely full, posed a fire hazard. Firefighters and first responders worked to secure the area, with no injuries reported.
Around 11:05 p.m., significant traffic hazards were reported along County Trunk D to County Trunk Z in Mattoon. Live wires were found down across the roadway, forcing the closure of several local roads. Emergency personnel urged drivers to avoid the area due to the serious danger posed by the downed power lines.
Later that night, at about 11:36 p.m., another fire-related assist call came in from near the intersection of Kolpack Road and Line Road, where a large tree had fallen, partially blocking the road. The electric company was already on site when responders arrived, addressing potential hazards from lines entangled in the debris.
