MATTOON, WI- A tornado confirmed by the National Weather Service touched down in the Mattoon area late Monday night, leaving a trail of damage across the small village and prompting a swift response from emergency personnel and utility crews.
Throughout the night, local law enforcement, fire departments, and highway department teams worked tirelessly to ensure residents’ safety as the storm moved through. Early this morning, assessment crews conducted drive-through inspections and evaluated the extent of the storm’s impact.
The majority of the damage was found within the Village of Mattoon. Several homes sustained moderate damage, particularly to roofs and siding. In addition, downed trees took out power lines and damaged utility poles, leading to widespread outages in the area.
Alliant Energy responded early Tuesday with multiple crews working on-site. As of this afternoon, officials said full power restoration was expected by this evening. While most roads in the area have been reopened and deemed passable, a few remain temporarily closed to allow utility workers to continue electrical repairs safely.
The Emergency Management Office remains in close communication with Mattoon officials and will continue providing support as the community begins recovery efforts.
“We want to thank all of the first responders, utility crews, and volunteers who stepped up to help during and after the storm,” said a statement from emergency management officials. “Your efforts over the past 24 hours are deeply appreciated.”
Residents are encouraged to remain cautious around downed power lines and debris as cleanup continues.
