NEW LONDON, WI- The 2025 lake sturgeon spawning run on the Wolf River is officially underway!
As of April 20th, sturgeon have been spotted along County Highway X, approximately two miles west of New London. This year’s spawning season has arrived with some unpredictability, influenced by warmer spring temperatures and lower water levels. Still, the excitement remains high as these ancient fish return for their annual ritual.
Sturgeon trails are open to the public, with parking areas available for visitors hoping to catch a glimpse of the action. During years with higher water levels, sturgeon can often be seen in less traditional locations as well. Notable viewing spots include Pfeifer Park behind the Chamber building at 420 N. Shawano St., the Black Iron Bridge on N. Water St., and near Johnny’s Little Shop of Bait at 1205 W. Wolf River Ave.
While it’s difficult to predict exactly how long the sturgeon will remain in the area, the Wisconsin DNR estimates the peak activity could last anywhere from one to three days. If you’re hoping to witness this natural spectacle, plan your visit soon!
For daily updates on the spawning run, call the DNR sturgeon hotline at (920) 303-5444.
