The Shawano Police Department responded to a string of incidents across the city, starting shortly after midnight.
Around 1 a.m., officers were called to Sharonas Bar on South Washington Street for a threatening incident, leading to a rapid multi-officer response. One arrest was made, and the case is listed as cleared by arrest.
Later in the morning, police investigated a break-in at Hensel’s Shawano Inn, also on South Washington. Bottles were stolen and broken in the bar area. A second report from the same location noted a burglary in an upstairs residence, which was eventually cleared and secured.
Police also checked on the welfare of a dispatcher who failed to report to work, confirmed a low-hanging wire was a disconnected phone line, and investigated a vehicle dropped off at a credit union possibly containing drugs after its deceased owner’s mother made the claim.
By 8 a.m., a domestic disturbance on West 3rd Street required officers to help a couple decide who needed to leave the residence.
Other notable incidents include trespassing on private property bordering DNR land, a reckless driver on Highway 29, and a teen allegedly trying to pull a sturgeon from the river at Sturgeon Park. That suspect fled before officers arrived.
And finally, a lockout call at Parkside Apartments had officers help retrieve keys locked inside a blue Mazda, and police were called about a woman reportedly unconscious in a running car at Walmart—she was later contacted and cleared.
It was a busy day for the Shawano County Sheriff’s Office with 37 incidents reported across the region. One of the more serious calls came in just after 4 PM near Highway 49 in the Town of Franzen. Emergency responders rushed to the scene of a rollover crash where a woman was reportedly trapped in her vehicle. Fire crews used the Jaws of Life to extricate her. Her condition has not yet been released.
There were multiple reports of reckless driving, including one involving a motorcyclist reportedly speeding at over 100 miles per hour on East Green Bay Street in Shawano. Another call noted manure haulers crossing into the wrong lane near Marion, raising safety concerns from residents.
Animal issues also topped the list. Stray cattle were seen roaming near Old 47 and Highway 156, and in another report, a dog killed chickens in a Birnamwood resident’s yard.
In a lighter twist, one citizen doing an Earth Day cleanup made a disturbing discovery—finding suspected drug baggies along Beech Road near Shawano. Authorities are investigating.
And finally, in Gillett, a homeowner reported someone dumping furniture on her vacant property. Deputies are reminding residents that illegal dumping can result in citations.
