SHAWANO, WI- Shawano Country, celebrated for its rich arts and cultural heritage, is unveiling its newest barn quilt — number 412 on its iconic Barn Quilt Trail — created especially for the upcoming NFL Draft in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
This special project began with an idea from Barb LaMue, President and CEO of New North, a regional economic development corporation covering 18 counties in Northeast Wisconsin. LaMue presented the concept to Peter Thillman, Executive Director of Shawano County Economic Progress, Inc., Suzanne Wittman, Executive Director of the Shawano Country Chamber of Commerce, and Michelle Eron, Shawano Country Tourism Manager. Their collaboration led to a partnership with the Green Bay Packers and the NFL, resulting in a unique artistic piece that reflects both sports and agricultural traditions.
The quilt, designed by Michelle Eron, was carefully created to match the NFL’s official brand colors and received approval from the league before painting began in late February. Two identical quilts were produced — one will be featured in the NFL Draft Experience fan festival in Green Bay, offering visitors a photo opportunity and a taste of Wisconsin’s rural roots. The second will be on permanent display at the Shawano Country Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center.
“This project brings national visibility to Shawano Country and celebrates the essence of who we are,” said Michelle Eron. “It merges art, agriculture, and sports in a way that honors our community’s traditions.”
A Storied Tradition
The Shawano Country Barn Quilt Project was launched in 2010 by local photographer Jim Leuenberger, inspired by similar displays in other states. The initiative aims to preserve historic barns, promote tourism, and engage local groups like 4-H and FFA through hands-on service and creativity.
Since its start, the trail has grown into a beloved feature of the area, with each colorful square telling a story — from family legacies to historical milestones. Tourists and locals alike enjoy the self-guided trail that winds through the region’s scenic backroads, offering a perfect combination of visual beauty and cultural storytelling.
“The Barn Quilt Trail is a testament to our community’s pride and creativity,” said Eron. “It’s a way for us to honor our farming communities while also attracting visitors who appreciate art, history, and the great outdoors.”
