NEW LONDON, Wis. – The New London Police Department is working with local organizations to address the growing challenge of stray animals after losing a key resource for housing them.
Last week, the department announced a policy change after Wolf River Veterinary Clinic informed officials it would no longer accept stray cats and dogs due to rising costs and low adoption rates. In response, Sleepy Creek Pet Lodge agreed to take in dogs for emergency quarantine, while Walker Family Veterinary Hospital will provide medical checks for homeless pets.
With no designated shelter, officers will no longer pick up stray animals. Instead, they will attempt to return lost pets home using tag or microchip information. If ownership cannot be determined, the animal will be released in the hope it finds its way back.
