MILWAUKEE, WI- In a major move to bolster their bullpen, the New York Yankees have reached an agreement to acquire All-Star closer Devin Williams from the Milwaukee Brewers. The trade sends left-hander Nestor Cortes and infield prospect Caleb Durbin to Milwaukee, with the Yankees also receiving more than $1 million in cash considerations, according to a source familiar with the deal.
Williams, a 30-year-old right-hander, was diagnosed with stress fractures in his back during spring training, causing him to miss the early part of the season. He made his debut on July 28 but still managed to deliver a stellar performance in 2024. With a 1.25 ERA and 14 saves in 15 chances, Williams struck out 38 batters in 21 2/3 innings.
A two-time All-Star in 2022 and 2023, Williams has been one of the league’s top relievers over the past few seasons, with a career ERA of 1.83 and 68 saves in 78 chances. Known for his devastating fastball, which averaged 94.7 mph, and his excellent changeup, Williams has been a dominant force at the back end of Milwaukee’s bullpen.
