SHAWANO, WI- Residents of the Shawano School District voted on December 9 against a proposal to purchase 20 acres of land located east of Shawano Community High School. The vote was 15-10, and it took place during a special meeting of the electorate, as mandated by state law.
The proposed land was designated only for “future use,” a vague description that led to some concerns among residents.
Superintendent Kurt Krizan clarified that the district had no specific plans for the land at this time. He noted that the district held a first right of refusal, which means it could purchase the land for the agreed-upon price if the seller comes to terms with another buyer.
The 20-acre parcel is owned by Mike Zingler and his siblings and is being offered for $531,000.
The 20 acres include a house, barn, outbuildings, agricultural land, and forested areas. Zingler added that another buyer, Dan Hartwig, intends to use the property for residential purposes.
Despite the board’s advocacy for the land purchase, the community’s concerns ultimately led to the rejection of the proposal.
