SHAWANO, WI- The recent cold snap in Northeast Wisconsin has kickstarted ice fishing season earlier than anticipated, with smaller lakes beginning to freeze. However, experts are urging caution as the ice remains thin and inconsistent.
Clark Delzer, DNR Warden in Shawano County says people still need to be very cautious.
“It looks like Shawano Lake has frozen all the way across, but it is not safe ice yet.”
Delzer said the next week should bring some good weather conditions for ice thickness.
“We saw about three inches in some areas, but it usually takes Shawano Lake a little longer to freeze. If you are an ice fisherman, you should be excited, especially by Christmas time.”
Fishing enthusiasts are reminded to test ice thickness with a chisel, carry safety gear like ice picks, and avoid venturing out alone. Authorities emphasize that no ice is entirely safe and encourage prioritizing safety over early-season excitement.
