SHAWANO, WI- The City of Shawano has received inquiries regarding Ordinance 1990, which governs the use of All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) and Utility Terrain Vehicles (UTVs) within city limits. A key question has been whether golf carts are permitted on city streets. The answer is no; golf carts are not allowed for street use.
According to the ordinance, a UTV is defined as a commercially designed motor-driven device that does not meet federal motor vehicle safety standards as of July 1, 2012. This definition excludes golf carts, low-speed vehicles, dune buggies, mini-trucks, or tracked vehicles, and is intended primarily for off-highway use.
ATV and UTV operators in Shawano must adhere to designated routes. Per state statutes, these vehicles are permitted on roads, freeways, or highways, except for the following locations:
- Green Bay St. from Main St. East to the city limits
- North Main St. from Third St. to Green Bay St.
- South Main St. from Green Bay St. South to the city limits
Furthermore, ATVs and UTVs cannot be operated within city limits between midnight and 6:00 a.m., except for snow removal.
