SHAWANO, WI- District 6 will have new representation as current Representative Elijah Behnke unseated the incumbent Peter Schmidt by just over 1,400 votes.
Behnke earned 59 percent of the vote, defeating Schmidt 4,787 to 3,357 Tuesday.
Behnke was currently serving in the 89th Assembly District, but after redistricting was done, moved his family to the 6th District.
Votes were tabulated in five different counties before Behnke could be declared the winner.
“I am honored to represent my five counties.” Behnke has voters in Waupaca, Brown, Oconto, Shawano and Menominee County.
“I value the truth, and my opponent did a lot of lies and I just had to pray that the truth prevails.”
Behnke won by 848 votes in Shawano County, 84 in Waupaca County, 382 in Oconto County and by 126 votes in Brown County. Schmidt won in Menominee County 62-52.
“We have to get costs down,” Behnke said. “Houses, land, vehicles, food, it’s just not right.” Behnke said he wants to find ways to offer tax credit for people who are taking care of themselves and their families.
Behnke said he spent 100 days knocking on doors and is looking forward to making the changes that people want.
Behnke said he was forced to campaign without a whole lot of money, but he was able to do it.
“You can’t buy these seats, they are just small enough that a person that works hard can win.”
