SHAWANO, WI- Crews have begun the extensive reconstruction of the intersection at state Highway 29 and County Road MMM, west of Shawano, to enhance safety with a new J-turn intersection, also known as a restricted crossing U-turn (RCUT), according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (DOT).
The project includes realigning County MMM and Clark Drive, installing RCUT lanes in the Highway 29 median, widening Highway 29 to add and lengthen right turn lanes, and performing concrete pavement patches on Highway 29. This is essentially a full reconstruction of the intersection, although the existing eastbound and westbound lanes of Highway 29 will remain with spot repairs.”
The project is divided into four stages. The initial stage is complete, and the second stage began on July 22, expected to last five to seven weeks.
Reylco Plus of De Pere, the prime contractor, will focus on the outside travel lanes of Highway 29, including right turn lanes and shoulder paving, and complete the realignment of County Road MMM and Clark Drive. During this stage, Highway 29 will be reduced to one lane in each direction, and access to and from County Road MMM and Clark Drive will be restricted.
A detour is in place for motorists needing to use County MMM, directing them via state Highway 29 to state Highway 22, which reconnects to County Road MMM.
The project’s budget is $2.83 million.
The third stage, anticipated to take six to eight weeks, will involve completing the median travel lanes, including left turn lanes, U-turns, and shoulders. Traffic on Highway 29 will use the outside lanes, with no left turns onto County Road MMM or Clark Drive, but right turns will be permitted. Limited access will be available to County Road MMM and Clark Drive.
The final phase, lasting one to two weeks and concluding in October, will see traffic on Highway 29 restricted to the inside lanes. Left turns onto County Road MMM and Clark Drive, as well as right turns from these roads onto Highway 29, will be allowed.
“The project also includes basic restoration landscaping, new pavement markings, signage, and lighting to illuminate the intersection and turn lanes,” Segerstrom added.
Work is scheduled from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays, with some Saturdays possible to maintain the project timeline.
