TIGERTON, WI- A tragic ATV accident at the Tigerton OHV Park and Campground in Shawano County on Saturday morning has left one person dead and another seriously injured.
According to a news release from Police Chief Michael Weatherwax, the incident was discovered around 8:30 a.m. when a campground employee found two individuals who had crashed into a tree and called 911. Emergency responders arrived quickly and found CPR in progress.
One of the victims was taken to Shawano ThedaCare Medical Center, while the other was airlifted to a trauma center by Aspirus Medivac. Neither individual was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, and they were riding an ATV designed for a single passenger, which was not registered. Alcohol is suspected to be a factor in the crash.
The identities of the individuals have not been released pending notification of next of kin.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is leading the investigation, with assistance from the Shawano County Sheriff’s Office, Tigerton Area Ambulance, Tigerton Fire Department, Tigerton Police Department, Shawano Ambulance Service, and Aspirus Medivac.
Chief Weatherwax urged the community to prioritize ATV and UTV safety by wearing helmets, using seat belts, completing safety courses, and driving with caution.
