SHAWANO, Wis. – In a June 19 meeting, the Shawano School Board decided to keep Shawano Community Middle School operational for at least the next decade, committing to immediate maintenance investments to preserve the building’s structural integrity. The board agreed to reevaluate the school’s future in 2031.
Jody Andres, a senior project architect with Hoffman Planning, Design and Construction Inc., emphasized the decision was based on community feedback and a need for a clear direction regarding the building’s use.
Current enrollment at Shawano Community Middle School stands at 468 students, but projections show a decline to between 363 and 424 students by the 2031-32 school year due to lower birth rates and increased open enrollment. Andres noted that while enrollment numbers are expected to stabilize by then, the school’s capacity needs will decrease by 6-10%.
Significant infrastructure updates are anticipated over the next 10-15 years, with an estimated $16 million required for maintenance, some of which might be covered if the 2024 fall referendum is approved. Major system replacements are forecasted for 2036-41.
In other decisions, the board discussed a potential $52.9 million referendum for November, aimed at various school improvements. This is a reduction from the $54.5 million proposal that failed in April. Key projects include remodeling space for a weight room and pushing for a permanent orchestra pit in the performing arts center.
The board decided against a new weight room addition at the high school, opting instead to remodel existing spaces. District offices would relocate to Olga Brener Intermediate School, with a new entrance to keep them separate from students.
Board member Frank Kugel stressed the need for further cost reductions to gain voter approval, citing concerns over taxpayer burden.
As the board continues to refine the referendum proposal, they aim to balance necessary improvements with fiscal responsibility, responding to community feedback and prioritizing essential updates.
