Roger Lee Kern, age 85, of Shawano, passed away Sunday, May 26, 2024, at Creekside Manor in Oak Creek, WI, where he had been a resident for the month. Roger was born April 4, 1939, in Green Bay, a son of the late John and Florence (Stumpf) Kern. He attended school in Shawano and graduated from Shawano High School with the Class of 1957. Following school, Roger was employed as a truck driver. At the age of 18, he was the youngest person in Shawano County to hold a Pilot’s License. On July 2, 1960, Roger was united in marriage to the former Aleen Geise at St. James Lutheran Church in Shawano. Roger lived an interesting and eventful life. He served as a Deputy Sheriff, an EMT, a volunteer firefighter in Cecil, and drove stockcar at Shawano Speedway. He and his wife, Aleen, owned and operated Kern’s Superette in Cecil for four years. His last job before retirement was working as the Smoke master at Hillside Farms in New London. Roger’s wife preceded him in death on February 14, 2018. Roger was a good and faithful member of St. James Lutheran Church in Shawano. He enjoyed working out with his wife at the Rec Center in Shawano and dancing. They were both regulars at Perkins in Shawano. A typical Wisconsinite, he loved cheering on the Brewers Baseball and Packers Football. As of late Roger spent much of his time reading and doing puzzles.
Survivors include his two sons, Brian (Latoria) Kern of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Aaron Kern of Cudahy, WI; five grandchildren, Austin, Peyton (Raenne) Kern, Faith, James, and Tristan; stepgranddaughter, Dena Anderson; and three great-grandchildren, Zion Anderson, Jelani Anderson, and Penelope Kern. He is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. Roger was preceded in death by his son, Paul Kern in 2012, and brother, John Kern.
A funeral service for Roger will be held on Friday, May 31, 2024, at 11:30 am at St. James Lutheran Church in Shawano. Pastor Andrew Zobel will officiate. Burial will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery in Shawano. Visitation will begin at the church on Friday at 10:00 am and continue until the time of service.
