TIGERTON, WI- Following a federal inspection of a sawmill in Shawano County, Tigerton Lumber Company faces proposed safety penalties totaling $283,608. The July 2023 inspection conducted by OSHA revealed persistent safety violations, including the exposure of employees to amputation hazards and other risks associated with unguarded machines.
The company had previously been labeled a severe violator in 2019 after an investigation into a fatal incident involving an employee in 2018. The recent inspection identified violations related to energy control procedures, the absence of personal locks essential for the lockout/tagout program, and a failure to provide required safety training for employees.
Inspectors cited Tigerton Lumber for three repeat violations, 14 serious violations, and two other-than-serious violations after examining various areas, including the maintenance shop, stacking and planning area, and the sawmill. The proposed penalties amount to $283,608.
Tigerton Lumber Company has 15 business days to either comply with the citations and penalties, request an informal conference with OSHA’s area director, or contest the findings before the independent Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission.
