In a unanimous 5-0 vote on December 11, the Shawano School Board gave the green light to a collaboration with Teachers on Call, aiming to address the ongoing challenges in finding substitute teachers. Notably, board members Jeana Winslow and Christine McKinnies were absent from the meeting, and John Arens and Al Pyatskowit left early.
The anticipated cost of the program exceeds $100,000 for a single year, but it is expected to expand the substitute pool significantly, reducing the need to assign additional duties to existing staff.
Under the partnership with Teachers on Call, there will be a dedicated person overseeing efforts to secure substitutes when needed. Nicole Hartlaben, the district’s human resources director, emphasized that the automated system used by teachers to inform the district of their absence will still be in place. Teachers on Call will handle the payroll for substitute teachers, and the district retains the option to terminate the contract with 30 days’ notice.
