MADISON, WI- State Representative Peter Schmidt (R-Bonduel) presented Seymour Fire Department Captain Steve Hurkman with the 2023 “First Responder of the Year” award during the Assembly floor session on Tuesday. The state Assembly honored Captain Hurkman in a public ceremony with other recipients from across the state.
“I was proud to honor Captain Steve Hurkman as the 6th Assembly District First Responder of the Year,” said Rep. Schmidt. “Captain Steve Hurkman has served humbly as a first responder for the City of Seymour Fire Department and Rescue Squad for over 50 years.”
Upon completing his enlistment in the U.S. Army serving in Vietnam, Steve returned to Seymour where he continued to be a servant leader. Steve has been a member of the Seymour Fire Department since August 9, 1973, where he still serves as a captain. Steve also joined the Seymour Rescue Squad, serving 21 years from 1977-1998.
“First responders are heroes among us and selflessly put others first. Captain Hurkman is a shining example of this heroism,” said Rep. Schmidt. “The City of Seymour is better off because of his selfless commitment to helping others.”
Along with providing each award recipient with a legislative citation recognizing their achievement, the state Assembly also passed a resolution declaring October 17th First Responders Appreciation Day.
