SHAWANO, WI-Shawano County supervisors were given a warning about the potential closure of the public library due to persistent issues with water leaks and mold infestations.
“When we have large rainfall, we are getting water in the library,” said Shawano Administrative Coordinator Jim Davel.
Davel provided further insight into the alarming conditions. He said, “There’s been some significant mold issues in the library. If some of you have been down in the basement, the paneling is actually buckled in. We’ve had an employee become ill.”
Davel disclosed that they have been looking at alternate locations. “There is going to have to be a lot of compromise across the board. Davel says this was not budgeted for, so there is going to have to be some additional money.”
One of the significant challenges in this situation is the uncertainty surrounding the associated costs. Davel emphasized, “This is not budgeted for, so we’re going to have to come back to the board if that is what’s going to happen.”
Davel said in Shawano County, the situation is unique. “It’s not a county building, it belongs to the library board, but the library board does not have money, so we have to work collectively to come up with a decision.
He said his hope was to add the library to the new multiuse facility that the county is looking at building. He says that is not an overnight solution.
“If you look at the other libraries in the county, they are very small, and those communities deal with that, so its not unheard of.”
