SHAWANO, WI- The Shawano Public Works Department has officially set the date for the fall curbside leaf collection as October 9th.
For the ease of collection, city residents are kindly requested to place their loose leaves at the curbside on their regular scheduled garbage collection day. Please be aware that city crews may experience some delays during this period, and your patience and understanding are greatly appreciated.
During the leaf collection period from October 9th to November 22nd, the usual limit of six bags or containers for yard waste will be temporarily waived. After November 22nd, residents are advised to utilize paper 30-gallon capacity biodegradable bags or plastic containers for all yard waste and leaves. These should be placed at the curbside on your designated garbage collection day.
For residents using plastic containers, it is essential to affix a visible yellow “Shawano Yard Waste” sticker to the container. These stickers are available at the Shawano Public Works office located at 2905 E. Richmond St. and at Shawano City Hall, which can be found at 127 S. Sawyer St.
To facilitate the efficient collection of leaves by city staff, please adhere to the following guidelines:
- Arrange leaves in windrows (long narrow lines) rather than creating piles next to the curb. Please note that items left in the alley will not be collected.
- Keep windrows as close to the curb as possible but avoid raking leaves into the street.
- Ensure windrows are clear of trees, hydrants, signs, posts, electrical pedestals, or any other obstacles.
- Remove all garbage, metal, branches, and sticks from the windrows.
- Crews will not collect plastic bags filled with leaves or yard waste at any time.
- Avoid parking vehicles next to the leaf windrows. If crews cannot access the windrows with their vacuum, pickup will have to wait until the next scheduled collection day.
Please be aware that inclement weather conditions may impact leaf collection. The vacuum system will not operate if leaves are excessively wet or during snowfall. Additionally, any bulky limbs and cuttings from trees and shrubs must be cut into four-foot lengths and tied into bundles not exceeding two feet in diameter. Do not place wood and brush in a container or garbage can; these should be positioned directly on the curb.
Property owners are responsible for the disposal of entire trees left at the terrace for collection. Grass, leaves, and garden waste can be composted at the landfill and may be taken there by any city resident during normal business hours, which are from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays. The landfill will also be open from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays until November 11th.
