BONDUEL, WI- The Coleman Cougars defeated the Bonduel Bears for the third straight season Friday night with a 30-12 win. Bonduel had two leads in the game, scoring the first touchdowns of the first and second half, but gave up three second half touchdowns to the Cougars.
The Bears scored on their first possession on a 20-yard touchdown pass from Noah Weier to Cade Johnson, but missed the extra point to lead 6-0. After getting stopped on their first two possessions, Coleman found the endzone on a Micah Kuchta 1-yard touchdown run. The two point conversion made it 8-6 Coleman. Not only did Bonduel lose the lead at that two-point conversion attempt, but they also lost their quarterback. Noah Weier was hurt playing defense and did not return the rest of the game. Coleman’s 8-6 lead stayed until halftime.
In the second half, Bonduel scored as back-up quarterback and punter Cade Johnson tossed a 4o-yard lob to Owen Springborn on a fourth down fake punt to give Bonduel the 12-8 lead. That would be the final lead of the game for the Bears as Coleman rattled off three second half touchdowns to pull away. Kuchta scored on his second 1-yard touchdown run and tossed a five-yard touchdown to Freshman Kolton Peters. Running Back Dylan VanErman capped off the scoring with a 29 yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.
Brady Gross led the Cougars rushing attack with 179 yards on 25 carries. VanErman added 96 yards and Kolton Peters added 82 yards. The Cougars piled up 370 rushing yards as a team. Bonduel was held to 32 yards on the ground, but got 115 yards through the air between Weier and Johnson, both throwing a touchdown pass. Owen Springborn led Bonduel in receiving with 4 catches for 61 yards and a score.
Coleman improves to 2-0 while Bonduel drops to 0-2. Coleman last lost a regular season contest during the 2020 COVID season, falling to Oshkosh Lourdes Academy 39-32 on October 30. Prior to that they lost to Kewaunee 21-18 on September 6, 2019.
