LITTLE CHUTE, WI- Shawano did not have an answer for Mustang’s Senior quarterback. In 2022, Charlie VandenBurgt rushed for 122 yards and six touchdowns all season. Friday he rushed for 131 yards and four touchdowns on the ground alone. Little Chute shutout Shawano 35-0.
“We did not help ourselves out, we knew our keys and we got caught out of position.”
Vandenburght scored from 14, 9, 16 and 18 yards out, while only completing four passes in the win. The Hawks defense was strong early, holding the Mustangs to a punt and a turnover on downs in their first two possessions, before VandenBurgt capped off a four play drive after a blocked punt.
“We need to get our guys up to speed,” Tomow said. “It does not matter who we play on Friday, we just have to get better.”
The Hawks first two drives of the game ended with interceptions by Junior quarterback Jerzy Brocker. Shawano ended up with five turnovers in the game, including four first half Brocker interceptions. Despite the interceptions, Brocker was still able to go 17 of 30 with 172 yards passing. Logan Sipple hauled in 8 catches for 126 yards. Dylan Hodkiewicz had five catches for 49 yards. “It starts upfront, so we need to push those guys and do a much better job protecting Jerzy, and let him showcase what he is capable of.”
Despite 17 rushes by the quarterback, the Hawks had four carries out of the backfield. “We need to block better,” Tomow said. “We need to play a little tougher up front.”
The Hawks were held to negative 9 yards rushing, while Little Chute piled up 260 yards on the ground.
Shawano will open up their home season against Denmark on Friday. The Vikings were predicted to finish last in the highly competitive North Eastern Conference. Denmark fell to New London in the season opener on Friday.
“We have had some rough times in Denmark the last two years. I’m glad they are coming here this time.”
