Four area girls basketball teams attempt to continue their season tonight in Sectional Semifinals.
DIVISION 1
Hortonville (23-3) vs Wausau West (18-8) @ Stevens Point
Plenty of college recruits will be on the floor at Stevens Point High School.
The Hortonville Polar Bears come into the game winners of their last four and winners of 5 of their last 7 contests. Hortonville is led in scoring by Sophomore Rainey Welson with 18.2 points a game. Trinity Mocaldo is scoring just over 10 points a game. The Polar Bears lost their second leading scorer Kallie Peppler to injury in January. The Polar Bears have won 12 straight regional titles and are coming off of a 61-43 win over Marshfield in the Regional Finals.
Wausau West finished third in the Wisconsin Valley Conference and enter Sectionals as a 7 seed. The Warriors squeeked by Superior 54-51 in the Regional Finals. West has three players that have committed to Division 2 ball after high school. Lexie White leads the team in scoring with 17.6 and Kelly Kray with 11.0. They have four players averaging double-digit scoring. The Warriors are coached by legendary coach Tom Weinkauf who has coached six state championship teams, including three with the Wausau Newman Girls.
DIVISION 2
New London (20-4) vs Lakeland (20-6) @ Antigo
The New London Bulldogs return to Sectionals after winning a Regional title. The Bulldogs are led by Lizzie Steingraber who has 963 career points coming in. The Division 1 St. Thomas University recruit is averaging 17.6 points a game.
Lakeland has two division 1 recruits who are sisters. Julianna Ouimette has scored 2,266 career points, and will be attending Lehigh University next year. Sophomore Kristina Ouimette is at 995 career points and has been contacted by many Division 1 schools. Lakeland has won 9 straight games coming in.
DIVISION 3
Freedom (25-1) vs Wrightstown (17-8) at Clintonville
It is the third meeting between these two conference rivals. Freedom has not lost since December 13 when they lost to Waupun. They had two convincing wins over Wrightstown 73-40 and 73-43. Leading scorer Sadie Jarmolowicz has been battling an injury, but still leads the team in scoring with 15.3 points a game. The Irish were state-runners-up last season.
Wrightstown finished 3rd in Conference. They are led by Danielle Bruecker with 13 points a game and Jordan Vickman with 10. The Tigers are winners of 5 of their last 6 games.
DIVISION 4
Bonduel vs Mishicot (19-6) at Oconto Falls
Bonduel is coming off of their 5th straight Conference title and another Regional Championship. They are one of the hottest teams in the area coming into the game with a 16 game winning streak. They are led by Hailie Zernicke with 12 points a game and Ella Hischke with 11.
Mishicot was 2nd in Conference and winners of 4 straight and 9 0f their last 10. They squeeked by Crandon 42-40 in the Regional Finals. They are led by Kailey Tulachka with 14 points a game. Julie Koeppel is averaging 13 points a game.
