SHAWANO, WI- The Shawano Police department offered free hot dogs to the community during another community event on Monday. Officers Tyler Thornborrow, Brandy Hoffman and Lieutenant Heidi Cartwright were at Memorial Park serving up hot dogs and friendly conversations with adults and kids.
“The idea is to get to know the community together,” Hoffman said. “Tyler and I are both in the schools, but there are other kids who are younger and in the daycares that we don’t always get to see, so we want to get out there so the kids can see that officers are friendly and that we want to help them.”
Kids and adults were offered a hot dog while splashing around at the splash pad, playing on the playground equipment or just stopping by to say hi.
“It is important and people can trust us, because there are people that do not have others that they can trust.”
During the summer months, Thornborrow and Hoffman spend more time engaging with the community while school is out. Hoffman says it is a way to keep in touch with kids during the summer.
“There are only so many of us officers, so we want the help of the community and for them to be the eyes and ears for us.”
Plenty of hot dogs and smiles were served up for 90 minutes Monday. Officers say they will continue to offer opportunities to engage with the community.
