SHAWANO, WI – Shawano School District Superintendent Randi Anderson informed the staff and parents that they will not be recommending the closure of a school building for the 2022-2023 school year.
The idea of a possible building closure was brought forward after it was announced that the district was facing a budget deficit of more than $2 million dollars.
“In keeping the lines of communication open and transparent, I want to let you know that the district will not be bringing a recommendation forward to close a building for the fall of the 2022-2023 school year,” the letter stated.
The notice also comes after multiple school board meetings in which parents urged the district to come up with another option.
“As we consider future options to maximize student learning that leverage the community’s financial commitment to our schools, we want to thoroughly vet all possible solutions for the best long-range plan for the district. To do that it is essential that we take the necessary time to gather feedback, cost solutions and bring recommendations to the Board. “
The letter does not state if they will choose between one of the other two proposed options of either increase in class sizes and making more staff cuts or cutting programs.
“We will continue to develop solutions to balance the budget for the for 2022-2023 school year. Our priority remains to minimize the impact of any reductions on the students, staff, and programs.“
The school board is scheduled to next meet the first Monday of April.
