SHAWANO, WI- One Shawano parent is looking to make a busy intersection more safe. Destiny Kahl says the intersection by Lincoln Street and County Road B by the High School can get very busy and driver’s are not driving safe there.
“I see people using County B as a four lane and people are just not watching where they are going.”
Vehicles can be seen driving from all directions, trying to share County Road B and the nearby intersections, and Kahl says some are just not patient.
“It gets really congested for morning pickup and drop off and people just fly around there.”
She witnessed a near tragedy this week and decided to take further action.
“I was dropping my daughter off and it was foggy. I saw a student and crossing, so I stopped and then a red vehicle just flew by with no regard to the student crossing.”
She is starting a petition to get support for some action to take place.
“I just don’t know if anything is being done with these drivers.”
Kahl says she does not know exactly what can be done, but offered some suggestions, including flashing lights like other intersections have.
“I think those are awesome and very bright and they work,” she said. “Maybe even a crossing guard there.”
Shawano County Sheriff Adam Bieber said any kind of safety updates would have to be a collaborative effort between the city and the county.
“I would personally like to see roundabouts at those intersections, and that would include state involvement.”
Bieber said the state has mentioned that they are considering a roundabout at B and Highway 22 which is also a dangerous.
