SHAWANO, WI- Fat Tuesday is a busy day for staff and management of Fanita’s Bakery in downtown Shawano. Manager Vita Lyman says this year they made about 3,000, and once again sold out.
“Every year we make more and more and we break our record every year.”
The polish treat is a tradition for the last day before lent. Each year, bakeries are busy making the special donut.
Fanita’s is an Italian bakery, but Lyman says the recipe come from a pure polish background, so you get a true paczki.
Staff at Fanita’s spent the better part of the Monday and again Tuesday morning baking them, and the hours in the kitchen was well worth it.
“The top sellers this year were custard and raspberry and the least seller this year was prune,” Lyman said.
Usually blueberry is one of the flavors but it was not available this year due to supply chain.
As far as what makes a bakery paczki, Lyman says it comes down to what it is it and how it is made.
“We use fresh eggs, flour and all original ingredients in them”
Once again, people from outside of Shawano paid a visit to the bakery for this years Fat Tuesday. “We have customers that come from all over to get our paczkis, and next year we will do it again.”
