ANTIGO, WI- Antigo Police say the suspect in a homicide investigation was taken into custody on Wednesday in Racine County. During a press conference, Antigo Police Captain Dan Duley said he was located at a boat landing.
38-year-old Derek David Goplin had been at large since the body of 63-year-old Susan Reese was found inside a residence in Antigo.
It is believed to be the first homicide in the City of Antigo in 33 years.
During the press conference it was mentioned that Goplin was arrested around 7:40 p.m. on Wednesday. “He was located at a boat landing by a citizen. He was looking sick, and that citizen transported him to a hospital,” Duley said.
Duley added that Goplin was positively identified at the hospital in Burlington. The extent of is sickness in unknown to police.
The initial criminal complaint filed indicates that security cameras showed footage of Goplin leaving a residence with his 5-year-old son at 5:15 p.m. the previous day. That child was later found safe by a Waukesha police officer at a motel complex.
“On behalf of the city of Antigo, we’d like to offer our sincere condolences to Susan Reese’s family and friends,” Duley said. “This is definitely a sad and tragic event that has happened in our community, and has far reaches, pain and sadness. It saddens our whole community. It touches everybody’s heart.”
