SHAWANO, WI- A Shawano County woman who was taken into custody on a bench warrant for not appearing in court on Tuesday, was released shortly after she was brought to jail.
Ann Retzlaff posted a $3500 cash bond, allowing her to be released until a future court date.
According to court records, Retzlaff did not appear in court on Tuesday, leading to Judge William Kuessel issuing the bench warrant. She was taken into custody on Wednesday by Shawano County Sheriff Officials and posted bail later that day.
Prior to her court time, Retzlaff sent an email to the Clerk of Courts, Ethan Schmidt, District Attorney Greg Parker, and Sheriff Adam Bieber. In the email, she indicated that she would be willing to appear by Zoom, but would not go where she did not feel safe.
“I have a right to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness and I do NOT consent to an illegal and unjust “bench warrant” or un-Constitutional fines, penalties, or false imprisonment (again).”
Shawano County Sheriff’s Department said they did take Retzlaff into custody on the bench warrant on Wednesday.
According to court records, the cash bond was signed on Thursday. It was also noted that Retzlaff is not to have contact with two listed officers and have no travel outside the State without prior court approval.
She is scheduled for a court appearance on November 23 at 1:30 p.m.
