OCONTO, WI- The Oconto Falls officer injured by gunfire in a shooting last week has been identified as 34-year-old Officer Nicole Blaskowski.
Officer Blaskowski has been with the Oconto Falls Police Department for about 1 year and has about 10 years of Law Enforcement experience.
“A lot of our staff know this family really well, and we are all really nervous that day, and this one is going to work out, but in this job, centimeters are crucial and with what we do, any incident can go sideways, “said Shawano County Sheriff Adam Bieber.
Blaskowski is married to Shawano County Lieutenant Jon Blaskowski and they have three children. She was previously a deputy and worked in dispatch for Shawano County before going to Oconto Falls, according to Shawano County Sheriff Adam Bieber.
On the day of the incident, Bieber said he drove his Lieutenant to the hospital to go see his wife.
“He was working and when I got the news, I drove Jon to the hospital and we were thankful to see that she was going to make it,” he said.
Bieber said days like this are always difficult, but this one was difficult in a different way.
“This one really hits home because it is someone in law enforcement and it is someone who we know here,” said Sheriff Bieber. “It is just another reminder of how dangerous this job really is.”
Oconto County Sheriff’s Office continues to handle the investigation.
It was released earlier on Wednesday that Officer Blaskowski was shot with her own weapon.
Oconto County prosecutors have filed nine charges against a 29-year-old woman accused of shooting an Oconto Falls Police officer. Charges against 29-year-old Alisha Kocken include attempted first-degree intentional homicide.
According to the report, police were called to an apartment Friday by a woman who claimed someone was trying to kidnap her child. When officers arrived, they were told by Kocken’s boyfriend that he had taken Kocken’s child to the park, prompting the accusation of kidnapping her child.
Kocken was agitated and began struggling with the female officer. According to the report, Kocken grabbed the officer’s hair, and the officer ended up on her knees, eventually taking the gun from the officers holster and fired three shots at the officer, with the third striking her in the head.
“It just shows that even what seems to be a routine police call can go sideways at anytime,” said Bieber. “We are just thankful that this one turned out to be okay and that she got to go home.”
