EL PASO, TX – Clintonville Native Luke Westphal will continue is road to a big league career as a pitcher with the San Diego Padre organization.
The news was announced this week.
The contract was purchased as Westphal was a member of the High Point Rockers, an American professional baseball team and partner of the MLB.
This will be Westphal’s second go-around in the big league system, but first time at the AAA level.
Westphal has been trying to get back into the MLB system since 2017 when he was released from the Minnesota Twins organization.
He was singed by the Twins to a minor league contract in 2015 after graduating from UW-Oshkosh. He was assigned to the Cedar Rapids Kernels, a High-A affiliate and played in the system for both the Kernels and Fort Meyers Miracle, a Low-A affiliate until 2016 when he was assigned to the Chattanooga Lookouts, A Double-A affiliate. After going back down to Fort Meyers, he was soon released from the Twins organization in January of 2017.
Westphal spent time playing ball over seas for the Melbourne Aces, Aguilas Cibaenas and Leones de Yucatan until he was signed as a free agent by the Rockers in March of 2021.
Westphal was just reactivated from the inactive list last week and just got the news of a new opportunity in Major League Baseball.
Westphal will report to the Padres Triple-A affiliate the El Paso Chihuahuas to start.
