OCONTO, WI- The Oconto County district attorney has dropped theft charges against the former mayor of Gillett. Oconto County District Attorney Edward D. Burke says the state can’t meet its burden of proof in the case against James Beaton.
Beaton was facing 13 felony counts and was scheduled to go on trial in June. He had been accused of embezzling funds from Kuehl Funeral Home. He pleaded not guilty to the charges and, in return, filed a civil suit against Legacy Funeral Chapel and Kuehl Funeral Home.
Beaton was elected mayor of Gillett in 2018 but stepped down the next year when the city council said he didn’t meet the residency requirement.
